The clock that marks the countdown of our planet

On the occasion of Climate Week, the screens of the Metronome showed a clock that counted down the life of our planet.

On the occasion of Climate Week, last Saturday, at around 3.20pm New York time, the Metronome’s screens showed the phrase “The Earth has a deadline”. After that sentence a clock appeared with the countdown 7:103:15:40:07.

These numbers mean the years, days, hours, minutes and seconds the planet has left before it is irreversibly altered by climate change. This countdown is an artistic project by Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd; who prioritized originality and grandiosity at the time of its creation. The main objective of these authors is to create social awareness of our actions in order to avoid irreparable damage to the Earth.

This artistic performance has managed to capture the attention of millions of people, since this immense time marker is located on one of the most important squares in the Manhattan district, specifically in Union Square.

“It’s our way of literally shouting to the world: count on us” – Gan Golan

Andrew and Gan explained that they based their calculations on the Mencator Climate Change Research Institute’s of Berlin. The clock will remain installed until 27 September on the occasion of New York’s climate week.

Artists and activists hope that the clock remains permanently projected or is exhibited in one of the city’s museums. This will continue to function as a reminder that the planet needs our help.
