The Game of Thrones universe continues to expand and is now heading straight for the big screen. Warner Bros. has confirmed that it is developing a film set in the world created by George R.R. Martin, a project that promises to bring the epic saga of Westeros to a gigantic cinematic scale. To this end, the studio has signed Emmy-nominated screenwriter Beau Willimon, known for his work on Andor and for creating the influential political series House of Cards. According to early reports, Willimon has already delivered a first draft of the script.
Although the details of the plot are still under wraps, everything points to the story focusing on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary conqueror who unified much of Westeros. Set approximately 300 years before the events of the original series, the film would chronicle the conquest led by Aegon alongside his sisters and wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, who, riding their dragons, managed to subdue six of the Seven Kingdoms and found the Targaryen dynasty.
The studio is envisioning the project as a colossal spectacle, comparable to the visual and narrative impact of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga. With massive battles, dragons dominating the skies, and the birth of one of the most powerful houses in Westeros, the film could become one of the most ambitious cinematic events in the universe created by Martin.
The development of the film comes at a key moment for the franchise, which continues to enjoy success on television with spin-offs such as House of the Dragon and The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Although the project is still in its early stages—with no director or release date confirmed—Willimon’s involvement is an important step towards bringing the story of Aegon the Conqueror to the big screen and continuing to expand the legacy of Westeros.
In the meantime, you can enjoy The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, available in its entirety on HBO Max.
