Wales Bonner and adidas Originals close the ‘Black Sunlight’ trilogy

Grace Wales Bonner and adidas are once again taking inspiration from the radical thinkers of the 1980s diaspora for the FW21 season.

Grace Wales Bonner returns to take inspiration from the radical thinkers of the 1980s diaspora to revamp and elevate a series of adidas archive pieces for the autumn/winter 2021 season.

This collection completes the “Black Sunlight” collaborative trilogy between the British designer and the Trefoil brand, alongside the “Lovers Rock” FW20 and “Essence” SS21.

As Tyler Mitchell ‘s imagery filters nostalgia into the episode, we can see how influences from European and African aesthetics merge into the same 80s-inspired imagery. Academic iconography and collegiate graphics are added to these identity codes, between T-shirts, joggers and anoraks.

The “WB Japan” sneakers close out the looks in a variety of color combinations including “Dark Marine/Easy Yellow/Cream White” and “Hazy Yellow/Brown/Dark Brown”, with nylon composite uppers and plush leather stripes. Also coexisting are the “Cream White/Easy Yellow/Dark Brown”, featuring a crochet tongue and moccasin trim, and the suede-clad “Dark Brown/Collegiate Burgundy/Easy Yellow”.

The adidas Originals by Wales Bonner FW21 collection will go on sale on 16 November. For the footwear, we will have to wait until early next year.
