Priya Ahluwalia, whose eponymous brand was one of eight winners of the LVMH Prize 2020, has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.
Ahluwalia is known for using sustainable production methods, as well as exploring her Indian-Nigerian heritage through fashion. Expanding on her commitment to using used and vintage materials, the designer’s latest collection was made with the help of Reskinned, a program that repurchases clothing from both individual consumers and brands.
Born to a Nigerian father and Indian mother, Ahluwalia drew inspiration from both sides of her family for FW 2021, presenting a menswear proposal supported by black sorority emblems, Nigerian jewelry and migration maps.
“We are delighted to announce Priya Ahluwalia as the fourth recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design. Ahluwalia’s unique and ethical design process combined with her ability and passion to give back to communities around London and the globe make her an inspiration for many young British designers,” Caroline Rush of the British Fashion Council said in an announcement statement. Ahluwalia joins previous award winners Richard Quinn, Bethany Williams and Rosh Mahtani.
