Chanel has presented its Cruise 2022 collection at the Carrières de Lumières, located in Provence. And the choice of this space was not accidental. It was the setting for Le Testament d’Orphée, the film by Jean Cocteau that inspired this latest proposal by Virginie Viard for the maison.
When it came to conceiving this new release, Virginie Viard not only took Cocteau’s work in this 1960s film as a starting point. She also drank from the close friendship that the artist had with Gabrielle Chanel at the time, when they both met at the designer’s apartment in Rue Cambon. And that is precisely where the current creative director went for inspiration. Therefore, the lions, fauns or sphinxes that adorned the sculptures of that place have been reinterpreted as graphic prints and embroidery for the occasion.
These references coexist with the punk aesthetics that Chanel alludes to through the black and white miniskirts, fishnet stockings or leather bangs that star in some looks. In fact, Stella Tennant‘s punk attitude also played a considerable role in the creative process of this collection, as it inspired the lip piercing jewelry worn by the models and also the photographs that Inez and Vinoodh took for the campaign.
Other details of the Chanel Cruise 2022 collection are the velvet garments or fabrics made from techniques such as crochet or macramé. And also the cotton dresses with embroidered flowers characteristic of Provence as the washed, daisies or blue felicia.
And speaking of Chanel… Did you know that the firm will be in charge of the restoration of La Rosaleda del Real Jardín Botánico? You can read about it here.
