Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley: Celebrating Music and Fashion in British Subculture

Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley celebrate the synergy between music and fashion in British subculture through a new collection.

British designer Nicholas Daley puts the spotlight on the roots of reggae icon Peter Tosh, celebrating the synergy between music and martial arts during the 1970s.

The collaboration unites both firms under the interest of how contemporary culture and traditional craftsmanship are linked. Both celebrate the different British subcultures that have existed in Britain; simultaneously exploring their connection to music and fashion. The strong ties between Fred Perry and Nicholas Daley are explained in two aligned brand philosophies.

Storytelling is at the heart of Nicholas Daley‘s designs and each piece is signed with patches that further build his narrative. For this season, the British designer aims to create a balance between the style of reggae icon Peter Tosh and the functionality and qualities of martial arts costume. He combines this by incorporating details and styles from the Fred Perry archive.

Peter Tosh was a reggae musician who, along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, was one of the main members of the band The Wailers. His particular style was characterised by dressing with elements of martial arts even on stage. From Karate belts to the full uniform that characterises this discipline. He was openly known for being a revolutionary in his thoughts and actions.

Constructed in a retro colour palette whose protagonist tones are golden orange; new maroon; kakhi and anthracite. The combinations and qualities that combine the pieces of this collaboration ensure a meticulous and modern collection.

Patches inspired by the belt categories of martial arts are added to the polo shirt. These are sewn onto the garment and an embroidered line is added to further decorate the piece with insignia. They are designed by Gaurab Thakali, an illustrator whose work mixes music with nightlife.

The bomber jacket features a “Fred Perry” embroidery on the back as a reference to team jackets, a symbol also designed by Thakali.

For Nicholas Daley re-launching this collaboration is about celebrating culture and music again. “I feel there is a good connection between my brand and Fred Perry, which is intertwined in the ethos of celebrating different cultures and music. That’s why I produced the collaboration with Fred Perry; I felt we are aligned in our beliefs and brands. We are both British fashion brands with a strong inspiration in the heritage of our subcultures”.

The star of the campaign for this Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley collection is musician Sam Akpro, whose sound combines influences from his London roots and his family’s Gambian heritage.
