Since joining Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh has been experimenting and hybridising between the codes of ultra-luxury tailoring and urban fashion. Now with his latest spring/summer 2022 collection entitled Amen Break he depicts generational tension and bridges between the past and the present, with a strong emphasis on the soundtrack.
The French maison’s creative director launches his new SS22 men’s collection. The capsule has been presented in an epic Tarantino-esque production with an all-star cast of legendary stars including GZA, Goldie, Saul Williams, Jim Joe and Lupe Fiasco.
Directed by Mahfuz Sultan, the fashion film explores “the act of passing something from one person to another, activating waves of change across generations and impacting the lives of others”. It is about generational tension and bridges between past and present, hip-hop and rave, community leaders and young rebels.
Tailoring is contrasted with tracksuits, formal wear meets raver design. It is a world of polar opposites, but at the same time, there is also a sense of harmony. There are also trench coats complemented by sunglasses that tell the story of a businessman with a penchant for these parties.
The chessboard pattern is another thread that flows throughout the Amen Break collection. As if that wasn’t enough, the film also features an extensive collection of Air Force 1‘s with the LV logo. A nod to the hip-hop community’s piracy of unofficial fashion and sportswear collaborations.
