The new era of Roberto Cavalli has only just begun. Fausto Puglisi, as the new creative director, has presented his debut collection for the autumn-winter 2021 season. The cultural and aesthetic strength that the brand exuded at the end of the nineties is once again vibrant in the Sicilian designer’s proposal.
Cavalli is a synonym of glamour and excess in his animal print dresses. It is this language that Puglisi incorporates again —in a contemporary version— in the FW collection. It is illustrated through a cast of models of all ages and gender identities, including Poison star and trans icon Daniela Santiago.
Puglisi, formerly creative director of Emmanuel Ungaro and his eponymous label, has initiated the rebirth of a brand that was no longer fashionable. In keeping with that clean slate, all content was deleted from his Instagram account, to begin the new era of Cavalli with tiger-striped flags and jaguar spots. A reboot in savage mode.
The intersection between fashion and celebrity that the designer used to work at is revived in this proposal that converges between maximalism, baroque and extravagant sensuality. Cavalli’s iconic animal prints are amplified and exaggerated through collages of patches and jacquards.
Matching the whole animal print universe, we find fangs and giant claws as heels on shoes and as clasps on leather bags. The same imaginary is also transferred to day-to-day garments such as maxi-feathers, sweaters, sweatshirts, and jeans covered in the same prints.
