Vivienne Westwood Red Label x Levi’s 501: breaking the mould

Vivienne Westwood’s youthful Red Label line has just unveiled a collaboration with Levi’s 501 that combines lifestyle and haute couture.

Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label youth line has just unveiled a collaboration with Levi’s 501. When it comes to combining lifestyle and haute couture, the British designer is an expert and does not disappoint.

The Vivienne Westwood Red Label x Levi’s 501 collaboration comes with the next chapter of Levi’s Japan’s “Denim de Mirai ~ DENIM PROJECT ~” series, an initiative to recycle used jeans that would otherwise go to landfill and thus contribute to minimising the effects of climate change.

The Red Label sub-brand, launched in 1993, has fallen into disuse except in Japan, where Westwood‘s proto-punk clothing is as much in demand as ever. Dame Viv follows Naomi Osaka and 3.1 Phillip Lim to breathe new life into denim, reinventing its used clothing through Westwood’s punk look.

The result is a five-piece collection consisting of a bucket hat, a tote bag, a shirt, 501 jeans and a corset. Vivienne’s chaos comes in the form of randomly placed graphic prints on each patchwork piece, including hearts and phrases such as “Teach on the go” or “Be bice to yourself”.

The Vivienne Westwood RED LABEL x Levi’s 501 collaboration collection arrives at the RED LABEL shop in Isetan Shinjuku on 23 March.
