Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Louis Vuitton, delves into the concept of time for his latest spring/summer 2022 runway show and teleports the audience back to the 19th century.

Nicolas Ghesquière describes the Louis Vuitton SS22 collection as a “big ball of time”. The creative director travelled back to the 19th century with designs full of ornate detailing. Presented on a chandelier-filled catwalk at the Louvre Museum, the capsule was inspired by the silhouettes of Marie Antonette.

Nicolas Ghesquière’s time travel was evident in the square-cut jackets, as well as the voluminous dresses paired with lace-up sandals. Also in the shimmering gold fabrics matched with futuristic sunglasses, adding an element of juxtaposition to the range.

The collection was complemented with art nouveau headpieces that were paired with jeans, long lingerie dresses and leather coats. Voluminous handbags and bright quilted jackets were a key feature of the show, as were polka dot capes and frayed chiffon designs.

Towards the end of the presentation, a protester stormed the stage with an anti-consumerism statement that read, “Overconsumption = Extinction”, reminding spectators of the damaging impact of the fashion industry. The person was quickly taken to the floor and removed from the show.
